An approved method in science to solve complex problems can be described as follows:

• For a complex system a model is created and simulated in a computer.

• The simulation will be corrected and optimized by measurements.

• Only now starts the development of the product itself, in our case the detector.

• It will be validated by experimental testing, resulting from the former simularion.

• Before the detector can be used in the field it must pass reliability tests.

For the highly complicated problem of landmine detection one has to proceed in the same way.

Simulation Tool

The first step is to develop a simulation tool. In the online accessible tool the global existing knowledge, the comprehensive experiences of scientists of different disciplines, of the detector manufacturer and of the deminers is summarized and edited for the landmine problem. In this way an interdisciplinary concentration of expert knowledge is achieved for a systematic analysis of landmine detection technologies. In this sense the tool serves as well as a basis for the Competence Network.
